Cornwall Burning Permit Procedure

Call the Selectmen’s office @ 860-672-4959 or email selectmen@cornwallct.gov. Office hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am – 12:00 and 1:00 – 4:00 pm. 860-672-4959. The Town will issue a permit which will be and send via email or mail. Per state regulations a copy must be in your possession at the burning site during the burning.

This is a residential permit for burning brush on residential property only. The State defines residential property as a house lot with a house which has a certificate of occupation. Burning in empty lots or in empty fields is not permitted under this residential permit.

Farms will need a special permit.

Other special permits can only be obtained from the Fire Marshal, Stan MacMillan, 860-364-0909.

When you are ready to burn you will need final verbal approval to proceed on the day you are burning. Call 860-364-0909. You will be asked to leave your name, address, and a phone number, preferably a cell phone number.

Your permit is only good for the thirty days indicated on the permit.

As stated under Special Conditions section, only brush less than 3” in diameter may be burned. No leaves, no grass, no wood chips, no demolition materials. Wet down the surrounding area and have water available for emergencies. Be present on site at all times while the fire is burning.
